For the first time an investigation has linked collagen powder to violence against Indigenous peoples in Brazilian forests
ALTThe stench arrives before the lorries do. They are carrying skins that were stripped from cattle carcasses days ago. Flies are everywhere.
The lorriesโ destination is Amparo, a small industrial town in Sรฃo Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. Here, Rousselot, a company owned by the Texan business Darling Ingredients, extracts collagen โ the active ingredient in health supplements at the centre of a global wellness craze.
But while collagenโs most evangelical users claim the protein can improve hair, skin, nails and joints, slowing the ageing process, it has a dubious effect on the health of the planet. Collagen can be extracted from fish, pig and cattle skin, but behind the wildly popular โbovineโ variety in particular lies an opaque industry driving the destruction of tropical forests and fuelling violence and human rights abuses in the Brazilian Amazon.
An investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, the Guardian, ITV and O Joio e O Trigo has found that tens of thousands of cattle raised on farms damaging tropical forests were processed at abattoirs connected to international collagen supply chains.
Some of this collagen can be traced all the way to Nestlรฉ-owned Vital Proteins, a major producer of collagen supplements championed by the actress Jennifer Aniston. Vital Proteins is sold globally โ including online on Amazon, in Walmart stores in the US, in Holland & Barrett and Boots in the UK and in Costco in both countries.
The investigation โ the first to connect bovine collagen with tropical forest loss and violence against Indigenous peoples โ found at least 2,600 sq km of deforestation linked to the supply chains of two Brazil-based collagen operations with connections to Darling: Rousselot and Gelnex, which is in the process of being acquired by Darling for $1.2bn. It is unclear how much of this deforestation, which was calculated by the Center for Climate Crime Analysis, is linked to Vital Proteins.
Also collagen supplements like. Literally do not work. Not that this would be remotely okay if they did, but also like. They really really don't.
As someone who works with a lot of biologists and biochemists you can mention collagen supplements to them and watch their eyes immediately go red with rage as they launch into an impromptu lecture on how THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS. Just because you consume collagen doesn't mean your body can actually USE IT it like that. You literally might as well just take capsules of protein powder instead, at least then your body doesn't have to work to try and break it down itself. Which is what it will do to the collagen. It won't just go "oh free collagen" and use it. It'll break it down into smaller proteins and amino acids best it can and then use those for literally whatever and dispose of the rest. It will not provide or produce more collagen specifically. You are just taking the shittiest most inefficient protein powder possible.
Collagen supplements are a scam and a lie. A scam that is apparently also contributing to environmental harm and racist exploitation and violence.

this stems from the activism that mexican feminists engaged in to push the ley olimpia, which for the first time in the country penalized “digital violence and crimes against sexual intimacy committed through media.” olimpia coral talks extensively about this, and I recommend anyone who talks spanish to look into her work!

If you scoured the history of feminist literature and replace “woman” with “person with vagina” and “man” with “person with a penis”, absolutely none of the truth would change. One group is oppressed by the other.
All the ideas about gender not being based on biology or whatever don’t even matter, because the violence is based on biology.

Heartbroken that the upcoming detrans documentary’s screening was canceled due to pressure from trans groups (who hadn’t even seen it and protested bc it was abt detransitioners).
Every day I see people actively pushing for the silence of anyone they see as dissenters- which has led to the combined dismissal/demonization of detransitioners. The vitriol towards detrans people supresses any actual research into HRT, it’s long term affects, and transition as a whole, and harms absolutely everyone. Plus it is vile. People who detransition face incredible backlash with no support, the exact opposite reaction than what the community gives when they transitioned, even though the support was promised to be based in love and self discovery. Most detransitioners are LGB, but are still made the enemy when they step away from transition or speak on negative experiences.
Suppressing detrans stories is actively harmful. There are more detransitioners than any of us know, and the longer people are afraid the more years we will lose to silence.

they do this so often!!! in my university, several women’s toilets were turned into gender neutral ones and the men’s were all left alone. and i heard similar for other universities in the UK! it’s insane because men’s bathrooms aren’t as crowded as women’s, and men aren’t at risk in bathrooms like women are, yet it’s women who are losing our bathrooms?
Can confirm - I’ve been in multiple building that have a ‘men’s washroom’ and a ‘washroom.’ And that’s all the options.
Even if both are labelled ‘gender neutral’ I can’t physically use a urinal so, practically, it’s not going to happen.
